Homer a/k/a Nelson's Story
September 2003. A good samaritan called Judy
Heiser to say that she had found him running
loose on a busy street in her neighborhood.
They put signs up to look for his owners but were
unable to foster him so he came to live with us
until he found his owners. We started calling him
Homer because the World Series was on and he
was GLUED to the TV for every game. He would
follow every pitch, fly and grounder with his nose.
He was a big boy well over standard and it
made it very difficult to watch the games <G>
I had to sit on the floor next to him to keep him
from being fixated on the TV screen. I believe
that he was left outside on his own a lot and
followed shadows on the ground and
reflections to keep himself from being too
bored. The signs stayed up for weeks and I
took an ad in the Miami Herald but no one
claimed him. He was an in tact male about 5
or 6 years old. He had a strange shaped head
and he found it very hard to settle down. He
paced a LOT but was very affectionate and
would pour his huge body into your lap if you invited him up on the couch. Tampa Bay Vizsla
Rescue found a great forever home for Homer. Mitchell and Mary met Chris , Maddie, Riley and I
at a Turnpike reststop near Vero Beach to bring him to his forever home. I still have the picture we
took of them meeting for the first time (see below). Homer a/k/a Nelson was our first
rescue foster and we are so happy to have received the following e-mail from his forever family.....
Mary writes...
"Thought you might like an update after 2 1/2 years! I can hardly believe it has been this long.
Nelson is completely a member of our family and is an absolute velcro case! I can truly say I have
never known a sweeter dog. Nelson has gone from being a wild runner to a dog who can (usually)
be voice-leashed when necessary. He loves our Weimaraner, Cotton, who likes him back. He's
occasionally still a little wild - last fall, he helped her tear her ACL, which, of course, means he lost
his playmate for a few months.
Unlike any other dog we've had (even our previous Vizsla), Nelson makes SURE he gets a couple
of miles of walking or jogging with his humans every day, rain or shine. And I've got to tell you -
remember that odd fixation he had with lights and reflections? He's still got it. We just figure he's
artistic.
Thank you so much for fostering Nelson for us. And, please thank the lady (I can't remember her
name!) who was in charge of breed rescue in 2003, who first told us about Nelson. He's a great
dog."
